This module will provide a deeper insight into the criminal (in)justice system as Activist Mirriam Kaba calls it, and explore how it evolved over time and the way it plays out in our current day and age where the process becomes the punishment.
The module will connect the criminal (in)justice system with the human rights framework and analyse how the current punitive model is failing mostly, explore alternatives to prison systems to reimagine the world without prisons, a goal advocated by many human rights activists including feminist, anti-racism, prison-abolitionist activist and scholar, Angela Davis.
It will also analyse the criminal (in)justice system from a feminist, SRHR and safe abortion rights perspective, and identify the impact of criminalization and legal restrictions on safe abortion rights. The course will explore different approaches to justice, such as, legalization versus decriminalization and revisit other movements for important lessons on decriminalization.
It will use the transformative and reproductive justice frameworks to explore alternative justice systems that challenges our current punitive and vengeance model of (in)justice and help us move towards understanding the urgent need for restorative and more holistic justice systems.
